GMC Sierra: Dream pickup or completely pointless for most Germans? We drove it!

You want to drive an American Monter pick-up? The GMC Sierra would be the right choice – but is it really the right car for German roads?

When we rode the GMC Sierra, our impressions were mixed. The pickup shines in some areas, but disappoints in others. Here are five reasons why we both loved the Sierra and found it completely unnecessary at the same time.

1. Performance and ride feel – impressive, but not for everyone

GMC Sierra on the roadAs far as the driving experience is concerned, we can't see the Sierra quite as positively.

With the 6.2-liter V8, the Sierra delivers an impressive power output of 490 hp and 624 Nm of torque. We think it behaves like a normal car in many situations – the steering is relatively smooth, you can easily adjust the steering wheel and pull it closer to you, and you steer surprisingly directly.

Our car tester and Youtuber Daniel Hohmeyer tries to classify the Sierra: "The Sierra drives like a strange mixture of a truck and a VW Crafter."

Now you would expect it to drive like that – but that was not the case during our test drive. We noticed the high weight when braking, because although we thought a small tap on the brake pedal would be enough at first, it doesn't do that by far. We had to put all our weight on the brakesto bring the colossus to a stop. It was especially difficult for us when driving on the highway, because the Sierra is simply not designed for speeds of over 130 km/h.

2. Interior – surprisingly luxurious

The interior of the Sierra surprised us positively. At first glance, you would think it's a commercial vehicle and correspondingly functional inside – but we were wrong. It offers many amenities, including a large infotainment display and high-quality materials. The seats are comfortable, and the equipment leaves little to be desired.

Daniel Hohmeyer states: "The cockpit is well thought out. A good mix of touch and analog buttons."

3. Towing capacity – impressive, but useless in DE

With a maximum towing capacity of up to 9 tonnes – which is really absurd – the Sierra is a strong partner for heavy loads. At least in the USA. In Europe, however, this is of no use to us, because here he is allowed to hook a maximum of 3.5 tons. Nevertheless, we were impressed.

What we found a bit strange due to this enormous number was that the payload is just 640 kilograms. Such a large pick-up with a payload of less than 1 tonne? What is this great staircase into the cargo area and the various ways to open the loading area for, if you are not allowed to load anything?

Daniel looks into the loading area of the GMC SierraThe loading area has a whopping 6 square meters - this information is not found anywhere else.

We were really enthusiastic about the "trunk" of the Sierra, the various ways to open the tailgate make perfect sense.

4. Technology – advanced, but not perfect

The Sierra is equipped with state-of-the-art technology, including a large touchscreen display and advanced driver assistance systems. However, there have been reports of software issues and unexpected system crashes that can affect the user experience.

Daniel sticks his head into the shelf of the GMC SierraThere are such large storage holes here that Daniel can even put his head there.

We couldn't determine this in our test, but we found that the automatic transmission reacts relatively slowly when you switch to Sport mode. Of course, the GMC is not a sports car – but if a sport mode is offered, we would also like to see something in that direction.

Cockpit GMC SierraWe like the interior of the Sierra, it is high-quality and functional at the same time.

In addition, GMC is increasingly relying on subscription models – for example, we couldn't use the integrated Google Maps because a subscription would have been required. This bothers us not only because it costs additional money, but above all because the Sierra, as an import vehicle in Germany, sometimes does not provide some functions at all.

5. Availability – rare on German roads

The GMC Sierra is widely used in the USA, but is a real exotic in Germany. This means that spare parts and services are harder to find, which could be a risk for potential buyers. The fact that it is not so often found on our roads is certainly also due to its sheer size - it is 5.80 meters long and already over two meters wide without exterior mirrors, which sometimes made us sweat quite a bit while driving.

Front of the GMC SierraThe GMC is a real colossus, the front is impressively large.

The tax also makes beads of sweat run down our faces - over 1,000 euros a year are due and in terms of consumption, it is about 20 liters per 100 kilometers during our test drive. You really have to think twice about when you hear the 91 liter tank – yes, that's right! – again. We also think that it is relatively expensive.

Car tester Daniel Hohmeyer notes: "The Sierra AT4 costs relatively much even in the USA - the equivalent of 70,000 euros."
